The estimates of employment for the current month are then obtained by multiplying these ratios by the previous month's employment estimates. Where possible these data are produced using a "weighted link relative" estimation technique in which a ratio of current-month weighted employment to that of the previous-month weighted employment is computed from a sample of establishments reporting for both months. CES State and Area employment data are produced using several estimation procedures. Industries are classified on the basis of their principal activity in accordance with the 2022 version of the North American Industry Classification System. Persons are counted at their place of work rather than at their place of residence those appearing on more than one payroll are counted on each payroll. Employment data refer to persons on establishment payrolls who receive pay for any part of the pay period which includes the 12th of the month. The CES survey is a Federal-State cooperative endeavor between State employment security agencies and the U.S. This release presents nonfarm payroll employment estimates from the CES program.
THINGS TO DO IN PHILADELPHIA IN JANUARY 2021 SERIES
The final benchmark revision for all state and metropolitan area series will be issued with the publication of the January 2024 State Employment and Unemployment news release in March 2024. Preliminary benchmark revisions for March 2023 for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and selected metropolitan areas at the total nonfarm level are available. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released first-quarter 2023 data from the QCEW on August 23, 2023. Virgin Islands, and about 450 metropolitan areas and divisions for the period from April 2022 to September 2023. As part of the benchmark process for benchmark year 2023, census-derived employment counts replace CES payroll employment estimates for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. These counts are derived from state unemployment insurance (UI) tax records that nearly all employers are required to file. Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV, had the smallest increase (+48,800), closely followed by Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA (+52,300), and Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ (+52,800), among the largest areas. New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA, had the largest increase (+227,000), followed by Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX (+178,600), and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA (+152,600). Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD, was 1 of the nation’s 12 largest metropolitan statistical areas in July 2023.
The metropolitan area had a 8.9-percent gain compared to the 3.9-percent increase for the nation. The majority of the employment gain in this supersector was in the accommodation and food services sector (up 15,700 jobs). Leisure and hospitality increased by 24,500 jobs over the year in the metropolitan area, with all four divisions adding jobs. Over-the-year net change for industry supersector employment in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, July 2023 Industry The 5.3-percent rise in the metropolitan area’s education and health services supersector compared to the 4.1-percent increase on a national level.Ĭhart 2. (See chart 2.) Most of the employment added in this supersector was concentrated in the health care and social assistance sector (+28,600 jobs). In Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD, education and health services had the largest gain (+35,200 jobs) among the metropolitan area’s private-industry supersectors.
Wilmington, DE-MD-NJ had 376,200 jobs as of July 2023, which made up 12 percent of the area’s employment. Camden, NJ, with 19 percent of area employment, gained 14,700 jobs. Montgomery County-Bucks County-Chester County, PA, with 37 percent of the metropolitan area’s total nonfarm employment, gained 35,300 jobs over the year, and Philadelphia, PA, which accounted for 32 percent of the area’s employment, added 35,900 jobs since July 2022. Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD, is made up of four metropolitan divisions-separately identifiable employment centers within the greater metropolitan area.
